A mansard loft conversion replaces the rear roof slope with a much steeper one, at around 70 degrees, topped with a flat roof. Windows sit in small dormers within the slope. The result is close to a full extra storey, and it often looks more traditional than a large box dormer.
Mansards are most common on terraced houses. Because they change the roof shape significantly, they usually need planning permission. Compare all options on our loft conversions page, or see dormer loft conversions for a simpler alternative.
Planning permission for mansards
Mansard conversions normally fall outside permitted development, so a planning application is needed. Councils generally look for a design that suits the street and respects neighbours. We prepare drawings with you and allow time for the application in the programme. Read do I need planning permission for a loft conversion?
